Varnish is usually applied over the top of the printed label while it is on the press in order to protect the labels from scratching or scuffing during the labeling process as well as when the product is on the shelf. Varnish can be applied over the entire label or just in certain areas. When a label is going to be laser-jet 'printed or overlaps onto itself, varnish should not be applied in those areas for best results.
